Thunder Coaches

Coach JC Alexander – Head Coach

Coach JC is entering his 7th season as the head coach for the Thunder Boys Basketball program. JC is a proud Thunder Alumni. Coach transferred to Mountain View for his senior year after growing up in Portland and attending Franklin HS for 3 years. Coach JC is excited to be the head coach again this year. In the first 6 seasons he has led the Thunder to 3 postseason berths, 2 state tournament appearances and 1 league title.

JC came to the sideline at Mountain after 3 seasons at Parkrose High School in Portland. During his 3 years at Parkrose, he led the Broncos to 3 state tournament appearances, finishing 16, 7 and 3rd respectively in his time. Also sending multiple kids off to college basketball, including 3 to the division 1 ranks.

Coach JC is the father of an energetic young boy who is 7 years old and in the 2nd grade. When JC is not in the gym with the Thunder, he is typically spending time with his son, somewhere outside or coaching him in the numerous sports he participates in year round.

Coach Steven “Stix” Hodney – Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Stix is entering his 3nd season as the varsity assistant coach at Mountain View, but he is not new to the school, coach has been on the staff  for all 6 years at MV and the 3 seasons at Parkrose.

Coach Hodney “Stixs” as everyone calls him, brings  wealth of knowledge and experience to the staff and program. Coach Stixs played college basketball at North Idaho College (then a NJCCAA Member). Coach Stix is originally from Maryland but had family ties out in Oregon, once he finished school, he moved to Vancouver, WA and starting working and playing adult softball.

In his spare time, Coach Stix’s is either playing softball, traveling all over the country or in the gym with the MV Boys.

Coach Jc’s Words:

“Stixs is probably one of the more important people in the program, as a volunteer, you don’t always get much in return, but his love for the game and love for the boys’ development, and assisting anywhere needed has been one of the more underrated aspects, but is the most appreciated.”

Coach Chris Wilson – JV Head Coach/Varsity Assistant

Coach Chris is entering his 3rd year with the Thunder Boys Basketball program. He recently graduated from Oregon State, and participated in intramurals there. Chris has done some amazing things in the Corvallis Community during his time at OSU, and commitment to growing, learning and building relationships with the boys is amazing.

Coach Chris lives in Portland, and played for Coach JC at Parkrose for 2 seasons.

Coach JC’s Words:

” Coach Chris is my first player to come back and want to coach, he also said he didn’t want to coach under anyone else. His youthfulness, excitement and joy to be giving back, when he was playing for me I could tell he would be giving back to the game at some point. It is nice having Chris around to help mentor the boys, and knows what I expect from my players first hand, and he can help them grow and thrive.”

Coach Izaiah Vongnath – Freshman Head Coach/Varsity Assistant

Coach Zay brings a wealth of basketball experience in his young age on many different levels. We are super excited to bring him on this year for his first year of coaching HS Basketball. But he has been coaching high school on the aau level. He also played college basketball at Lane College in Eugene and has built an amazing training business of basketball skill work and weights training. Izaiah is also joining the Thunder Staff after playing 4 years at Union HS, so we are excited to bring him over to the right side.

Coach JC’s Words –

“It is super challenging finding young coaches who have an ability to coach and understand the game but also ability to connect with the kids and who want to be in the gym all the time. Izaiah checked off all those boxes and we cannot be more excited to have him with the Thunder now.”
